Vajpai Arjun (18 days 11 Months and 16years) is the youngest Indian to reach the summit of Mt. Everest. Nima Tshering Sherpa, Tshering Phinjo Sherpa and Arjun Vajpai started from Camp IV (South Col 7950m) at 10:24 pm on 21 May and reached the summit of Mt. Everest at 6:33 am on May 22.

Expedition Leader Mr. Maxut Zhumayev –Kazakhasta

Mr. Pivtsov Vassiliy – Kazakhstan and

Mr. Chekhlov Vladislav – Kazakhasta

Asian Trekking Family extends heartfelt congratulations to all the successful Mt. Lhotse and Mt. Everest Expedition Summit participants.

Appa Sherpa, SAARC Good will Ambassador for Climate Change, carried the Nepal Tourism Year 2011 Campaign flag and the WWF banner with the slogan ” YOU HEARD OUR VOICE, NOW RAISE YOURS – WE CAN STOP CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE HIMALAYAS “to the top of the Everest to draw international attention for 2011 campaign of Nepal Tourism and global warming and climate change.

The Eco Everest Expedition 2010 is led by two times Everest conqueror, Dawa Steven Sherpa, an ardent advocate of climate change issues. Dawa Steven is the executive director of Asian Trekking (P) Ltd., and a WWF climate for Life Ambassador.

Eco Everest Expedition is ruled by Asian Trekking and emphasizes on climbing in an eco-sensitive way and field testing different methods of eco-sensitive to be taken when climbing in the Himalayas. This year, the team returned to base camp with around 5,000 pounds of old waste.

The team also brought all human waste produced by the climbers of the expedition and Sherpa. The expedition has called for submissions for others to follow suit. In this effort, the Eco Everest Expedition has also provided other expeditions on the mountain with Re-Stop bags (toilet bags).
In 2008, Eco Everest Expedition team brought 965 pounds of waste, 75 pounds of human waste from the top of the base camp. Similarly Eco Everest Expedition in 2009 brought 6,000 pounds of waste under the “Cash for Trash” program that included 115 pounds of human waste products.

The remains of an Italian military helicopter in the same year have also been recovered from the edge of the Khumbu Icefall (5486m). The helicopter crashed between Camp I and Camp II (approx. 6200m) on the Mt. Everest during the Italian Expedition to Everest in 1973. This probably shows the movement of the Khumbu Icefall (5450m) 1.3 km in the last 37 years. The Eco Everest Expedition team brought 700 kilos of the crashed helicopter.
From 2008 to date Eco Everest Expedition has gathered more than 12,000 kilograms of waste from the previous issue and more than 300 pounds of human waste products from Mt. Everest for proper disposal. The main authors of trash collection for 2008 and 2009 is by Asian Trekking and 2010 by Asian Trekking, Reinhold Messner, The North Face and The Alpine conservation.

After being victim of personal losses and household during the Dig Tsho Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) on August 3, 1985, a direct result of melting glaciers in the Himalayas has been active in raising awareness climate change impacts on the fragile mountain environment and mountain communities.
The annual “Beat the GLOF Action Run and Save the Himalaya – Khumbu Festival” program will be held from June 4, 2010 in the Khumbu region of Mount Everest. The event is organized by iDEAS, an NGO formed by Dawa Steven Sherpa and Sherwi Yondhen Tshokpa, a network of Sherpa students.

Hundreds of local, national and international runners are going to start the Action Run from Khumjung and the road trip will follow as closely as possible the path of a GLOF which is potentially dangerous glacial lakes Imja Lake, Ngozumpa Lake or Dig Tsho is to burst its banks. The same day, Save the Khumbu Himalayan Festival will be held in the village of Khumjung with the support of various organizations.
Khumbu Youth groups compete in the traditional dance song contest. The festival is to promote and preserve the mountain culture and tradition. The event is sponsored by the North Face, Asian Trekking, Nepal Mountaineering Association, Himalayan Eco-Resort & Phakding Khumjung, Agni Air, Base Camp from Namche, Lukla and Lavilla-Sherpani Paradise Lodge Lukla.

Many of us know Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the summit of Everest, but we may not be aware of the fact how many days it took them to reach the summit.

It took more than 15 days for Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary to get victory upon the world’s highest peak for the first time, but their entire Everest expedition was more than 3 months long. Everest expedition was considered very hard and exigent trip some years ago. But, Everest mission can be achieved only in about 8 hours now and is much more easily nowadays. Mountaineers can walk easily via normal boots almost up to Kalapathar (6,000 m) these days while some years before “Crampons” were a must to climb up to Kalapathar also.

“Everest expedition has become much easier trip now,” says Pemba Dorje Sherpa, a 10 times Everest summitter.

“This drastic change is due to effect of climate change. We can see the rocks clearly up to the height of 8,000 meters of Mt. Everest. Effect of climate change and global warming has been so vigorously seen in the Everest region that there are many small and big lakes formed by rapid melting process of ice where some years before mountaineers had to melt ice for water.” Pemba says

“The government is not paying any attention towards the effect of climate change in the Himalayas of Nepal. Government is just concerned about the taxes and not about the condition of locals. This change in Himalayan region is going to bring many problems along with icy-flood making the life of locals quite unsafe,” Pemba said anxiously.

Additionally, world record holder as 19 times Mt. Everest summitter, Apa Sherpa has claimed that he has found water in about the height of 8,000 m in Mt. Everest.

Pemba Dorje further says, “Although the change on the mountain was only seen notably after 2006, the process had already started from 2004.” He also claimed that he has shot the video of environment change occurring in the Himalaya and Himalayan regions. He further says that government must ban expeditions to Himalayas of Nepal for 1 or 2 years to acquire attention of the whole world in this matter.

Another prominent expeditor and mountain conservation ambassador, Dawa Steven Sherpa has also warned the government about this environment change and requested the government to be aware from it and take the appropriate step considering the condition of the locals of Himalaya.

Pemba Dorje Sherpa is also scheduled to meet President of USA, Barack Obama on November 7, 2009 and affirmed that he will explain almost all things about the effect of climate change in Himalayan region. Also, he will ask for a help on behalf of locals of Himalayan region with the president of USA. He is also planning to give a stone of Everest Base Camp as a souvenir to Obama while the meeting.

Pemba’s meeting with Barak Obama is considered as a part of a cooperative awareness program ‘350’ being organized by Worldwide Youth Group against climate change. ‘350’ is the highest and safest numerical quantity of Co2 (Carbondioxide). Besides, the main aim of this ‘350’ awareness program is to give pressure to developed countries to cut down their Co2 production. Scientists warn the world that the Co2 level in the atmosphere has reached 390 ppm, and it is urgent to minimize it down immediately to at least 350 ppm which is the highest safe margin.

Mr. Pushkar Shah, a young brave Nepalese cyclist has finally got victory upon 150 countries with his bicycle. Mr. Puskar Shah, son of a peace-keeping soldier had started his journey of world tour in 1998 and plans to secure his goal till to 2010 including the cycling tour to Everest. He speaks that the main objective of his world cycling tour is not for the international fame or material gain but simply for spreading the message of ‘peace’ all over the world. Further, he has recently uncovered one of his future plans to climb the world’s highest mountain, Mt. Everest with the flags of all countries which he has collected during his “World Peace Cycling Tour” trip.
According to Puskar, his father, a peace-keeping soldier who died in 1986, is the main source of inspiration for his World Peace Cycling Tour. Mr. Shah has almost cycled all the major countries of world especially of Africa, America and Europe to spread his world peace message. He further anticipates that he will go around 390,000km (242,334 miles) by the beginning of his climb to Everest next year via cycling trip to world.
The journey of Mr. Shah was not as easy as we think. He spent several frustrating and dreadful hours. He said that he was kidnapped and robbed while he was in Mexico; however, he was lucky and was able to escape from there. He was again beaten and knocked unconscious in his tent while traveling in Barbados. Additionally, his bicycle was also stolen in New Zealand, but the former Mt. Everest defeater, Sir Edmund Hilary presented him with a new one. Not only this, he remembers the time during his trip eating offensive foods like discarded orange skins, wild fruits from trees and plants. Despite of the awful circumstances, this fearless and ever optimist cyclist is buoyant to go on due to love and support of people who offered him kindness and hospitality during his voyage.
The most interesting fact is that he has not been ill once while his journey – “not even a headache,” he says cheerfully. He further says that he visits clubs and schools of different communities while in his trip. There he offers speeches about peace and need to live in harmony, respect for human rights, democratic values, other’s religion and cultures etc., and he finds his real achievement in these activities.
The fact that he started his journey of world peace tour with only rupee ($1.50) and blessing of his mother is a very heart paining and emotional fact of his life. But after his goal and emotional fact was explored to public, he started to get cash donations, which led him to secure his goal successful. He further says that does not spend his money for accommodations but only for airline tickets because he has been getting incessant proposes of help and shelter throughout his trip.
The most inspiring thing Mr. Shah says is “If you see a Nepalese guy panting and puffing on a bicycle with a sticker ‘I ride therefore I am’ please yield and for one second think about how you as an individual can contribute to world peace.”

Everest

Prime minister of Nepal, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal is going to present a piece of rock from Mount Everest to US President Barack Obama as a symbol of concern for the impact of climate change on the Himalayas.

All head of states will attend a United Nation General Assembly meeting as well as hold talks on climate change in New York next week. The prime minister is heading to the US on Sunday evening to attend the UN General Assembly and the Climate Change Summit of the United Nations that will take place next week in New York.

Environmental group, World Wildlife Fund-Nepal said Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal had promised to carry the “memento” and give it to Obama when world leaders meet in New York next week as “a symbol of the melting Himalayas in the wake of climate change”. The rock was brought from the 8,850 metre (29,035 feet) Mount Everest by Apa Sherpa, who climbed the mountain and hit the record of climbing it 19th time this May. While addressing the UN General Assembly, Nepal will inform the international community about the country’s political situation and the ongoing peace process.

A World Wildlife Fund-Nepal statement said more than 200,000 youth had also signed a petition to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanding action on global warming ahead of crucial climate talks in Copenhagen. Negotiations on an accord to replace the Kyoto Protocol are scheduled to conclude at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in the Danish capital in December.

The youngest republic nation, Nepal is a mountainous country where eight of the world’s 14 tallest peaks including Mount Everest reside. Although Nepal is responsible for only 0.025 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, which is among the world’s lowest is doomed to be most vulnerable to climate change more than it deserves.

Environmental campaigners refer to the Himalayas as the “Third Pole” and say the melting glaciers are the biggest potential contributors to rising sea levels after the North and South Poles.

The high snow clad mountains including Mount Everest is the point of attraction for the tourists all over the world. Markedly, Nepal collects most of its revenue via tourism activities like expeditions, peak climbing, trekking, white water rafting, cannoning, kayaking, etc., for which the only platform are the snow-covered Himalayas that are jeopardized due to global warming. Activities of developed countries are more responsible than developing and poor countries for climate change and global warming.
