Bad weather was hampering rescue efforts and unfortunately he lost his life, his expedition organizer, Asian Trekking said on Saturday.
“The mountain that Humar was climbing, Langtang Lirung, is technically tough and not everyone dare climb it,” said Zimba Zangbu Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.
“Humar was courageous,” said Mr. Sherpa. “It’s a tragedy that he slipped and fell. We are very sorry to have lost such a world-renowned climber who had such a deep love for Nepal’s mountains.”
Tomaz Humar was believed to be trapped at an altitude of about 20,670 feet (6,300 meters) on the southern face of the (23,710-feet-high (7,227-meter-high) Langtang Lirung Mountain. Rescuers discovered Tomaz Humar´s body during an aerial search of the 7,234-metre Langtang Lirung peak early Saturday. He last contacted his base team on Tuesday and informed of his injury.

Asian Trekking’s Dawa Sherpa said, “He had clearly fallen during the climb and broken his spine and leg. He was climbing alone, with no guides or porters.”

Dawa Sherpa is one who also coordinated the rescue effort.

Humar became famous in the mountaineering world after his solo ascent of the massive south face of Dhaulagiri, world’s seventh-highest mountain in 1999. At that time, the route was widely seen as near-suicidal, and Humar’s success made him a national celebrity and established him among the world’s top mountaineers. Again in 2005, he got trapped in the Himalayas on an icy ledge of mountain Nanga Parbat at about (19,685 feet) 6,000 meters during a solo climb. Two Pakistani army helicopter pilots finally saved him and were later granted Slovenian utmost award for bravery.

Humar, who is married, with two children was remarked greatest climber of the modern era by popular Italian climber, Reinhold Messner who is renowned for making the first solo ascents of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen eight-thousanders” (peaks over 8,000 m above sea level).
