South African swimmer aiming record on Everest

World famous South African swimmer and environmentalist Lewis Pugh is on the verge of his hardest unprecedented challenge.
Pugh is the only man to have won a swim long distance in all oceans of the world, will try to cross a glacial lake on Mount Everest, 5300m altitude, wearing only a Speedo, on May 23.

The 40-year-old man wants to draw attention to the melting of glaciers in Asia, which supply water to two billion people in several countries, including India, Afghanistan, Cambodia and Thailand.
“But glaciers are melting due to climate change. And without a steady supply of water, there is a real risk of instability in the region,” said Pugh.

To prepare for his swim a mile on the Khumbu glacier which will begin training in Lake Imja.

In an interview by satellite telephone, Pugh said he had to leave practice Imja lake swimming because it was “too dangerous.” The water temperature was 1 ° C and air temperature was -20 ° C.
Pugh said that, “It’s not easy here. Corps were taken to the mountains past of our tent. Nobody has done this before. But I’m trying to get those negative thoughts”.
