Happy New Year, Nepal Sambat 1130

Nepal Sambat 1130 is being celebrated in different parts of Nepal with various programmes. Around 7AM this morning a rally started from Basantpur to mark the coming of the New Year. President, Prime Minister and other prominent leaders have issued New Year wishes to all Nepalis a happy and prosperous year ahead.

Nepal Sambat was used as national calender in Medieval Nepal and early part of modern Nepal. It was removed during BS 1960 by then country supreme Chandra Samsher in favor of BS.

Shankhadhar Sakhwa started Nepal Sambat in 880 AD freeing poor peasants from their debts. His name has been included in the list of “National Heroes of Nepal” by the cabinet decision on Nov 18, 1999.
