2553rd Buddha Jayanti Observed

The 2553rd birth anniversary of Siddhartha Gautam Buddha was observed on Saturday 10th May 2009. Buddha was born, enlightened and attained nirvana on Baisakh Purnima (full moon day). Buddhists all around country flock around Buddhist monasteries to pay respect to the great teacher of non-violence principle.

Swoyambhu Stupa

Buddha was born in Lumbini, Nepal and raised in the small kingdom of Kaplivastu. Son of King Suddhodana and Queen Maya spent 29 years as Prince until one day he left the palace to find the meaning of life. It is believed that at the age of 35, he attained enlightenment and taught how to set free human beings from the unhappiness and sufferings of life. At the age of 80, he attained Parinirvana or deathless state abandoning the earthly body.
